l’isle joyeuse (1904)

to those who are well-versed in french, you already know what it means. to those who are not as lucky (including yours truly), l’isle joyeuse simply means the joyous isle. it’s as simple as that.

to lovers of classical music, you might recognize this quaint little phrase as one of the lesser-known works of claude debussy. for reasons unknown to myself, this piece makes me calm and gives me a feeling of peace unlike any other composition. although some might argue that this piece is simply nothing more than a messy mixture of notes and chords, to me it is perfect.
