today i was alone for lunch so i thought of packing my lunch in my bento box and see how much i can fit in it… and it was definitely too much for one person! so when uni starts i’ll pack my lunch in my disneyland bento box instead of this one

another try at the octodogs. i’ve tried it once and it didn’t work very well, it turns out that i cut the tentacles wrongly >w< hahah i've made 2 cute carp sausages too. don't they look cute?

my favourite ingredient in the kitchen
bread crumbs, otherwise known as panko in japanese

korokke and sausages all done and placed on paper towels to soak any extra oil

success! my cute octodogs
a bit shrivelled though, any ideas how to prevent this? or maybe it’s the wrong type of sausage… i usually don’t eat sausages but i have to now, because they look so cute

everything packed into my bento! 3 pieces of cream korokke, 2 sausage octopuses, 2 carp sausages and 3 quail eggs

close up on the cute carps

i tried making a cat korokke
i should have decorated the eggs too but i was lazy
the cream sauce was too hard and congealed :S it was tough to chew… i shouldn’t have cook it for so long D: in any case i still like potato and meat korokke…

yesterday i finally made oyakodon for lunch! teddy gave it a thumbs-up >w< it was nice~ but i used chicken stock instead of katsuobushi stock so perhaps it doesn’t really taste like the one we ate in japan? but it was tasty so who cares! i couldn’t get the raw egg to look nice on the chicken though…
oyakodon is basically chicken meat with raw egg poured over the meat and rice
it’s a common meal in japan that is considered cheap and fast. the name oyakodon is a combination of the words oyako and don.
oyako 親子 means parent-and-child (refering to the chicken as the “parent” and the egg as the “child”)
don 丼 means a ricebowl meal (usually with topping like meat)

preparations for lunch starts at 10am

i love onions! they’re a pain to cut though D: but i love the sound of onions being cut on the cutting board

chicken marinated with usukuchi shoyu and mirin, with a bit of cornflour

bought quail eggs the night before :3 they’re pretty useful in making bento

after decoration :3 it puts a smile on one’s face when your food looks cute! and don’t worry, it’s edible =w= i used seaweed to make the faces

a close-up of the quail eggs on the oyakodon

a fulfilling meal!
tomorrow i’ll be challenging something i’ve made before, but in a cuter style

made lunch for myself today
since i usually only cook meat, i figured i should start eating some vegetables >w< i only like eating vegetables that are cooked till soft, as in so-soft-you-don't-even-need-to-chew-them soft, so i tried making vegetable stew since it would soften the vegetables

ingredients for the vegetable stew

no other things added
just the original taste of the vegetables, plus a bit of salt.

mushrooms :3 i used the top for the omuraisu and the stems were tossed into the vegetable stew.

i seriously need a non-stick pan D: the omelette for the omuraisu failed awesomely. i could cry looking at it. the rice was awesome though.

i was horrified by the state of the refridgerator in my house and proceeded to clean it out for about 2 hours. my mother is always nagging me to clean up my room but boy oh boy, you should have seen the disgusting mess that was hidden in that big white box…
it’s all clean now, and the plastic containers of meat in the freezer are now labelled so that i will know what the hell is in each container
have been eager to cook these past few days after watching too much mago mago arashi! i enjoy the cooking but the cleaning up always suck.
i want a non-stick frying pan
better still, a square one so i can make my tamagoyaki in peace.

i love neatly labelled stuff. it’s the ocd in me, i swear!

after hours of cleaning…

it finally looks neat and tidy. i can stop worrying about maggots now…

a reward for myself :3
looking forward for uni to reopen so i can try my hand at bento!

i made some teriyaki sauce from scratch and cooked this for lunch today~ it was delicious! not so much like real teriyaki, since it was more watery than the instant type, but it was delicious nonetheless
am happy. and so very easy to make!

i’m so proud of myself today >w< i've managed to cook simple lunch for four today
it was a bit hectic in the kitchen because i overslept so there was not enough time and i was worried that it might not be done in time for when my cousin comes home from school so i had teddy help me with some things.

today’s lunch
minced pork korokke, miso soup and tamagoyaki
my first time ever cooking something that is not premade, packaged and instant!

tamagoyaki. this was very sad for me because upon pouring the egg into the non-stick pan i realized due to my mother the non-stick pan is now very-stick pan.

my happy korokke! a bit too bland for everyone’s taste but it was my first time so i didn’t want to risk making it too salty by drowning it in usukuchi shoyu and mirin XD shall improve on the seasoning of the pork and marinate it a bit longer (and saltier). will eventually need to learn how to make the dipping sauce because teddy was bitching about not having any sauce for the korokke
since i’m pretty much bored at home lately i’m motivated to try to cook more stuff. watching mago mago arashi makes me feel happy
“hey i can do that!”
cooking is fun huh?
but it’s good if you have someone else to help you wash the mess you make in the kitchen afterwards

they forgot the sprig of mint leaves on top of the chocolate gateux but oh well
happy birthday nino!

yes we went out to celebrate the birthday of someone we don’t know and will probably never get to know (it’s still better than celebrating the birthday of someone 2-D or nonexistant lol)
before having the birthday cake we went to ume tei in subang for dinner >w<

teddy’s mixed korokke bento

close-up of the awesome cream korokke <3

i ordered kitsune udon. i miss the kitsune udon in the kansai center T_T augh…

a very happy birthday to 二宮和也 ninomiya kazunari, who turns 26 today! may he look forever 17 and continue to prosper in his acting and singing career ♥ and may i be so lucky as to attend an arashi concert in japan next year >w< (and may i have the chance to meet him in person ♥ )
ニノ、お誕生日おめでとう!!!
いつも17歳に見られるように (笑) そして、いつか日本でニノを会いに出来るように~ ♥
ニノ大好き~!!!
i was supposed to update this at 11pm just now (because japan is early by one hour) but the internet wasn't working D: drats.
will be going out tomorrow night with teddy to celebrate nino's birthday
japanese dinner, and after that to zen for the cake.

i’ve always liked 二宮和也 ninomiya kazunari from 嵐 arashi but recently i’ve been really obsessed about him to the point of actually DREAMING about him XD;; not only is he cute, he is also very talented in many aspects : sports (he was the MVP for the johnny’s sports event), music (he composes, sings, dances and plays the guitar and piano) and acting.
recently i’ve been really into his solo performances, and one of my favourite songs is 虹 niji, meaning “rainbow” in japanese. it’s written from a girl’s point of view, saying how she wishes her boyfriend could say nice things to her once in a while, but he is awkward and shy about it. in the end he eventually says that she is beautiful (when compared to the rainbow both of them saw), and seeing his embarassed face, she says thank you. the melody is nice and simple, and his voice suits the song perfectly.
screencaps from the arashi around asia 2008 in tokyo (time) concert of nino’s solo performance

he looks good with glasses
even if he’s all drenched in sweat…

i like his outfit too >w< he plays a kawai ^▽^

close up

in the end of the performance he removes his glasses. i didn’t know the act of removing one’s glasses can be so heart-stoppingly sexy *O* lots of other fans agree, because that small gesture made all the girls scream XD

how my desktop looks like now
i made a wallpaper with the screencaps from the performance. i simply must buy this dvd when i go to japan in september *O*

on the first of april, all of us from malaysia were separated into different groups for our orientation. all of us had multiple tasks that were basically the same but we were sent to different places around 大阪 osaka. each group consists of 6 members ^▽^ it was all very exciting because it was our first time travelling by ourselves in a foreign place, and having been in japan for only 2 days prior to this outing, it was nerve-wracking and fun at the same time!

i woke up at 6am to a gloomy sky
the weather forecast in japan is always right.
we all took the free shuttle bus from the center to the train station. our journey was as such : りんくうタウンrinku town –> 天下茶屋 tengachaya –> 恵美須町 ebisucho.

a familiar sight
the rinku town station, situated right next to a shopping mall called seacle.

here we go! i miss japanese trains

we were unsure about which train to board at tengachaya and tried asking this schoolboy, but he was too scared of us and ran away (not literally) after mumbling “i’m not sure, i’m not from around here…”
we got off at ebisucho station and walked outside to be greeted by an awesome gust of spring wind =w= it was so cold and strong, it almost knocked us off our feet (no, not an exaggeration).

this area is called 新世界 shinsekai, meaning “new world” in japanese. although this area was considered to be one of the more “dangerous” and “seedier” places in osaka, it is actually not as dangerous as most people think it is (to me anyway).

first stop, 通天閣 tsutenkaku tower!
we were too early though, so we walked around for a bit and while waiting for the the opening time to enter the tower, we met up with another group and hung out for some time while eating osaka’s famous takoyaki! it was delicious
cheap and steaming hot, fresh off the grill!

the takoyaki actually belongs to saga :p he treated me to one of his. i didn’t want to buy any because i wouldn’t be able to finish them, they were so big!
after that, we lined up to enter the tower
we had a discount coupon from the booklet that was given together with our train pass so we entered for free hahah! normal visitors would have to pay from about 500円 to 600円 per person (junior high school students and senior citizens are given a discount).

unobstructed view of osaka city from the top of the tower
the weather was quite cloudy so this is the best picture i could take.

inside the tower
there is an observation deck on the 5th floor…

an amusing signboard written in osaka-ben.
after leaving the tower, we proceeded to have lunch at a restaurant located next to the tower
at that time we didn’t really know it, but it’s a really famous store! we only went in because it began to rain, it was the nearest restaurant we could find and there were lots of people lining up outside
upon asking the lady who was lining up in front of us, it turns out that the store is very famous for a local specialty called 串かつ kushi katsu!

as you can see from all the people lining up in the rain… the store is a famous kushi katsu chain store called だるま daruma ^▽^ as you can see on the right side of the signboard, there are 3 stores in the same area alone O_O

cabbage is served as an appetizer and you can dip it in the box of soysauce on the table
after eating, you put the sticks into the round wooden container so that they can count them and you will be charged accordingly.

this is how kushi katsu looks like. the cheapest kushi katsu starts from 105円 per stick and there are many types to choose from, ranging from chicken and pork to mochi and cheese. i miss this too T_T
after that we proceeded to look for the next place on our task list! we took the train to 日本橋 nipponbashi and met a very kind and helpful salaryman! we were staring at the huge map in the train station because we didn’t know which exit to take, and this plump salaryman who was dashing by saw our faces and asked in english, “do you guys need help?” we were absolutely STUNNED
he was not young but the way he phrased his question was SO american hahah! we proceeded to assure him that we can speak japanese and then he look much more relieved, and after looking at the maps in our hands, he proceeded to lead us out of the station and towards the right direction. thank you so much, nice mr. salaryman!

the famous puffer fish of osaka
there are many restaurants in osaka <3 haha food paradise ftw!

the cutest takoyaki store whose mascot is that red little demon.

a cute paper lantern outside a japanese restaurant in the many alleys of osaka

osaka’s manhole lol
i try my best to take a picture of every type of manhole i see in japan. this design is of the osaka castle surrounded by cherry blossoms. as you can see from the picture, it was raining… my jeans were soaked

cute puffer fish lanterns >w<

our first stop was 法善寺 houzen-ji, a small temple in one of the alleys. since the area was like a maze, it took us quite some time to find this temple >o< it's a small, quiet temple that is famous for moss-covered jizo statues.

the aforementioned moss-covered statues.

おみくじ omikuji, or paper fortunes. the word literally means “sacred lottery”
you can get one from the temple and if it’s not very good, you can tie it at the temple so that your luck will change for the better. if you get a good one (which is rare), you can keep it with you ^^

purify yourself before entering the shrine is considered a must

lanterns in perspective make a good photo
our next stop was directly opposite to the temple, an ukiyo-e museum called 髪形浮世絵館 kamigata ukiyo-e museum.

in front of the museum. i love the cat <3 and i've just realized after taking the photo that my hands were clenched like a cat's paws… you can't blame me, it was freezing cold. no pictures were allowed inside the museum though… not really interesting unless you like ukiyo-e paintings, but at the top floor there is a gorgeous uchikake (wedding kimono) display, and downstairs there is a zakka (japanese handcraft) shop worth looking at, though the goods are pretty pricey! you can enter the shop by a side entrance without paying for the entrance fee to the museum. we had a coupon so it was free.

lastly, here’s a picture of me scratching biliken’s sole for good luck
biliken is everywhere in osaka! and i especially like this one because he’s wearing the hanshin tigers’ jersey ^▽^
we also visited osaka castle but i’ll write about that in another entry because it is so awesome it deserves an entry of its own
